Kahele Gives Status Report To Governor On Lanakila Homes Renovation

Jun 22, 2012 No Comments ›› admin

HILO, Hawaiʻi – Hawaii Island State Senator Gilbert Kahele took Governor Abercrombie on a tour of the Lanakila Homes Public Housing site earlier today. The Governor who was in town for ground breaking ceremonies at the University of Hawaii Hilo and Hospice Of Hilo took the time out of his schedule to stop at Lanakila Homes and get a status update from Senator Kahele. Kahele, who this legislative session lobbied for $7.5 million dollars for the renovation of the abandoned Lanakila homes, grew up as a child in Lanakila and made it a personal goal of his to get this public housing project renovated when he took office. The “block 4” section of Lanakila as it is most commonly called, has sat in a total state of disrepair for over a decade and is an embarrassment and eyesore for the State and residents of Hilo. With his personal visit to tour the derelict site, Governor Abercrombie made a pledge to get the monies released so the project can begin immediately. Also attending the meeting was Uri Barron-Silva a father of two children who months ago received a housing award letter from the State for a home once they were renovated. He had an opportunity to share his story with the Governor and the trouble he has had finding adequate public housing for his family. Uri and his family would be a direct beneficiary of the renovated homes and at the end of their conversation the Governor heard Uriʻs message and vowed to do something about it.
