Senator Kahele visits the KOA Puna 2011 Toys for Tots Family Day

KOA Puna motorcycle club hosted a Toy’s for Tots family day at Maku’u Farmers Market on Saturday, Nov. 19th 2011. Started in 1947 by the United States Marine Corps, the Toy’s for Tots program has collected and distributed over 500 million toys in the U.S. Working in association with the Maku’u Famers Association and local businesses, the Puna club is working towards a goal of raising $10,000.00 to gift 400 toys to local keiki. Saturday’s event featured music, food, bouncy toy’s and games and was the wrap-up for this years campaign which began in October.

Senator Kahele honors Hawai’i Island Seniors at ERS Luncheon

Hawai’i Islands State Senator Gil Kahele spent the day honoring Hawai’i Islands seniors at the annual ERS luncheon in Hilo on Friday, Nov. 18th 2011. The Elderly Recreation Services (ERS) program, run but the Parks and Recreation’s Elderly Activities Divison provides various programs for our seniors at 25 senior center’s on the island. Through a “learning center” concept, various classes are also offered which allows our seniors many different options that they can choose to be a part of. Yesterday’s luncheon honored the many volunteers and individuals that help to make Hawai’i Islands senior program a big success!

Kahele hosts his Hilo “Talk Story” Last Night

Hawai’i Island’s District 2 State Senator Gil Kahele hosted and moderated his final “Talk Story” of the fall at Waiakea High School last night in Hilo. Speaking to a dozen members of the community Senator Kahele gave a legislative update as well as  update the community on specific projects the Senator is pursuing in East Hawai’i. Also in attendance were East Hawai’i State Representative Clifton Tsuji, Karen Teshima Executive Assistant to Mayor Kenoi and Wendy Botelho-Cortez Governor Abercrombie’s East Hawai’i Representative. A range of issues were discussed such as agricultural, building on the Big Island’s tourism industry, gaming, education and Hwy-130. Next up for Senator Kahele is a Hwy-130 update in Puna on December 1st as well as an education forum on December 2nd with Hawai’i Islands Board of Education member, Brian De Lima.
