Board of Education Confirmation

Senator Kahele and his colleagues voted to confirm all 9 members of the newly appointed Board Of Education in today’s session. Representing the island of Hawai’i was Hilo attorney Brian De Lima. Like Senator Kahele De Lima is a graduate of Hilo High School and previously served as a county council member. Senator Kahele had this to say about newly confirmed Board of Education member Brian De Lima,

I have known Brian his wife Paige and his children for many years. Brian has been a pillar of the Hilo and Big Island community’s and will be an excellent choice and whom I know will bring fresh perspective’s and new ideas to the Board of Education

The 9 new members of the Board of Education are:
First Hawaiian Bank CEO Don Horner, former Hawaii County Councilman Brian De Lima, Maui Memorial Medical Center CEO Wesley Lo, Kapiolani Health Foundation philanthropy director Kim Gennaula, retired Hawaii Employer-Union Benefits Trust Fund Administrator Jim Williams, attorney Nancy Budd, University of Hawaii at Manoa Graduate Professional Access Program Associate Director Charlene Cuaresma, former YWCA on Oahu CEO Cheryl Kauhane Lupenui and Board of Regents Executive Administrator Keith Amemiya.

Hawaiian Language Immersion students visit Senator Kahele

Today Senator Kahele had an opportunity to host the Hawaiian Language Immersion students from Ke Kula ‘O Nawahiokalaniopu’u. Senator Kahele had an opportunity to introduce the haumana to Chief Justice Mark Recktenwald in the Capitol Rotunda as well as take them to the Executive Branch to visit Governor Neil Abercrombie’s office on the 5th floor. The haumana and the Senator also had an opportunity to visit the statue of Queen Liliuokulani and pay their respects to Hawai’i’s last Mo’i.

April 9th Hilo & Puna Community Visit

April 9th Hilo & Puna Community Visit

On Saturday April 9th, Senator Kahele returned to his Senate District 2 and attended several events in the district. Starting with the grand opening of the new McDonald’s in Hilo.

Senator Kahele attended the event with local owner Patrick Lim and other leaders of the community. Moving on to Puna, Senator Kahele attended the Hawaiian Community Meeting on Geothermal Development with Native Hawaiian leaders at the Pahoa Community Center.

Senator Kahele stated to the organizers and attendees that

the presenters from Oahu in the past, have assisted the Maori community in New Zealand to make geothermal more palatable and successful-insuring it is done the right way

Senator Kahele then visited the Hawai’i Academy of Art’s and Science Public Charter School as well as the Pahoa Community Center Skate Park where he had a chance to talk to Puna youth skaters enjoying a Saturday afternoon at the Pahoa Community facility. Senator Kahele is committed to the Puna District, recently noted as the fastest growing community in the State by the 2010 census, and will be making many more visits to the community in the near future.
