HILO, Hawaiʻi ~ State Senator Gilbert Kahele won re-election Tuesday night to continue serving as Hiloʻs State Senator for Senate District One. Kahele who has served in the State Senate for four years beginning in 2010 with his appointment by Governor Neil Abercrombie will now serve a four year term beginning in January 2015. Kahele who garnered 78.9% of the vote had his largest margin of victory ever in Hilo with 11,638 votes. Senator Kahele said after last nights second printout; “I am humbled and honored that the people of Hilo have given me another opportunity to serve them for another four years. I would like to thank my opponent, Gregory Arianoff-Kobata for a spirited and clean campaign. I would like to also commend all the candidates from all three parties for participating in this years election. It is never easy to run for public office but the diverse candidates that were fielded from both the Democratic, Republican and Libertarian parties proved that democracy is still alive and there are people that are willing to step up to make Hawaiʻi a better place for our future generations. With David Ige and Shan Tsutsui looking to be the team that will lead the State and having worked with both of them, I think we can work together going forward. That relationship is really important. Finally, I would like to send a special mahalo to my hard working campaign team, the hundreds of volunteers and the dozens of unions and organizations whoʻs time and financial support made this outcome possible. Your tireless support, commitment and dedication is something I will always remember when representing the people of Hawaiʻi in the Senate”
